Hollywood Brown Derby: Is It Worth the Splurge?

Sometimes the best meals happen when you're just wandering. My roommate and I made the executive decision to give Hollywood Studios a morning stroll — because honestly, why not? A couple of shows, a ride on Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railroad (Mickey is my guy, no notes), and then a last-minute lunch reservation at a place I'd been meaning to try for a while: Hollywood Brown Derby.

I have a rule — I can't report on it if I haven't experienced it myself. So here we are.

The Vibe: Old Hollywood Meets Disney Magic

Walk in and you're immediately transported. Dark wood tones, warm lighting, and caricatures of Old Hollywood celebrities lining the walls. It's got real Golden Age energy — the kind of place that makes you feel like you should be wearing a blazer. It's pretty, it's theatrical, and it feels intentional. A solid first impression.

Fair warning though: this is one of the more expensive restaurants on Disney property, $35-$60 per person. But hey — it's only money.

The Food

Bread Service — They kick things off with a warm basket of rolls, and I do mean warm. Nearly burned my fingers picking one up, which is exactly the energy I want from bread service. Nothing fancy — a classic dinner roll — but it had a chewy crust and a soft, pillowy inside. The star was the large pat of butter scattered with sea salt on top. Simple, but it works. Included bread service will always earn points from me.

The Famous Cobb Salad (And Why It's a Must-Order)— This was a must-order. The original Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant invented the Cobb Salad, and they toss it tableside, which alone is worth watching. Spit-roasted turkey, bacon, egg, tomato, blue cheese, avocado, and a classic dressing — tossed right in front of you. Super fresh, beautifully chopped, and most importantly: you got a little bit of everything in every single bite. Nothing worse than running out of toppings before you run out of lettuce. This one nailed it.

The Filet Mignon (my roommate's order) — Rhubarb-red wine demi-glace, Yukon Gold potato, and seasonal vegetable. According to him: super tender, cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the sauce had a nice subtle sweetness to it. The vegetable — some kind of broccoli-cauliflower hybrid (nobody knows everything) — was well-cooked with a slight crunch, exactly right. The weak link? The mashed potatoes. They had that reheated-from-yesterday texture that's hard to hide. The dish overall lacked a little salt, but the protein itself was solid.

The Service: Where Hollywood Brown Derby Really Shines

This is where Hollywood Brown Derby genuinely shines. The service was impeccable. The right amount of attentiveness, personality, and warmth — without hovering over you while you're mid-conversation. That balance is harder to pull off than most people realize, and they do it well.

Hollywood Brown Derby: The Honest Verdict

I enjoyed lunch here, and under the right circumstances, I'd go back. Just know what you're signing up for: this is a special occasion restaurant, not an everyday Disney lunch spot. Worth it for a birthday, an anniversary, or a "treat yourself" moment.

One more thing — they just reopened their outdoor lounge with a new awning to keep the weather out. Haven't checked it out yet, but that's on the list.

Disney Dining Plan note: Hollywood Brown Derby will run you 2 Table Service Credits. Honestly? I'd skip using credits here and pay out of pocket. Save those credits for something else and pay cash for this one.

How to Get a Reservation

I got lucky — it wasn't a busy day and there were open reservations when I checked. But I wouldn't roll the dice on that if you're visiting as a non-local. Disney opens up Advance Dining Reservations 60 days out at 6am, and yes, for the popular spots you genuinely need to be up that early to snag a table. The good news? That's my job. I can be up at 6am so you don't have to be.
